How it works

Point your camera. Get your answer. See the reason.

No food databases to search, no serving sizes to guess. Three steps, about ten seconds.

01

Scan it

Photograph the plate or the label, scan the barcode, or just type what you're having — "Chick-fil-A grilled sandwich" is enough.

02

Get a verdict

Safe, caution, or avoid — checked against every condition you've told Salty Hippo you're managing, in one pass.

03

See why

Every flag names the nutrient, the estimated amount, and the guideline it's measured against — so you can decide, not just obey.

Beyond a single scan

The tools that make it a daily habit, not a one-off check.

Medication interactions

Add what you take — or photograph the bottle — and get warned when a food interacts with it, with the source cited.

Fluid tracking

Photograph each drink. We estimate the net fluid (cup size, fill level, ice) and total it against the limit your care team set.

Portion adjustment

Had half the burger, or two scoops? Tell it how much you actually ate and the verdict recalculates for that portion.

Recipes from your fridge

Photograph your ingredients and get recipes that already fit your conditions — not a generic recipe box.

Food journal

Every confirmed scan lands in a dated diary with daily totals and over-limit flags — ready for your next appointment.

Barcode lookup

Packaged food gets an exact nutrition read from its label via the Open Food Facts database — no estimating.

Food diary

Walk into your next appointment with the answers.

"What have you been eating?" is the first question every nephrologist, dietitian, and endocrinologist asks. Salty Hippo keeps the record for you — automatically, every time you confirm a scan.

  • Daily totals that matterSodium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, carbs, and fluid, day by day.
  • Over-limit days flaggedEnter the limits your care team gave you and any day that goes over is marked on the calendar.
  • Only what you confirmNothing is logged without your say-so, so the diary stays honest.
Where the answers come from

Every verdict traces back to a named, published guideline.

Salty Hippo doesn't invent thresholds. Each condition profile is built from the clinical guidance actually published for it, and cited in the app right next to the finding it supports.

NKF
National Kidney Foundation — sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein guidance for chronic kidney disease and dialysis.
AHA
American Heart Association — sodium and saturated fat guidance for blood pressure and heart disease.
DIABETES CANADA
Clinical practice guidelines for carbohydrate and added-sugar management.
FDA
Nutrition Facts label standards — the basis for exact reads on packaged and barcode-scanned food.
WHO
World Health Organization — sugar intake guidance for adults and children.
DGA 2025–2030
Dietary Guidelines for Americans — general healthy-eating reference for the no-diagnosis-yet option.

Questions

Good to know before you start.

Is Salty Hippo medical advice?

No. Salty Hippo is a screening and awareness tool. It helps you spot foods that are likely to conflict with published guidance for your conditions, and shows you why. Your doctor or dietitian's advice always comes first — bring your diary to them and decide together.

How accurate are the nutrient estimates from a photo?

Photo estimates are AI-generated and come with a confidence score. They're good for spotting the big problems — a bowl of ramen with a full day's sodium — rather than exact lab numbers. For packaged food, scan the barcode to get the label's exact values. Tell the app how much you actually ate and everything recalculates.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Salty Hippo runs in your phone's browser. You can add it to your home screen (the app will show you how) so it opens like a regular app, but it works either way.

What if I have more than one condition?

That's exactly what it's built for. Select every condition that applies — kidney disease plus diabetes plus high blood pressure, for example — and every scan is checked against all of them at once, with a separate finding for each.

Where do the limits come from?

Default thresholds come from the published guidelines listed above. If your care team has given you personal daily limits for sodium, potassium, phosphorus, or fluid, enter them in the app and those take over.

How does billing work?

Enter your email to start a 7-day free trial. After that it's $9.99 a month, billed through Stripe. You can manage or cancel your plan any time from inside the app.
